What is a Bluetooth Printer?

A Bluetooth printer is any printer that can connect to devices solely via Bluetooth technology instead of Wi-Fi. This connection type allows for convenient wireless connection from a range of devices on an ad hoc basis making Bluetooth printers the perfect choice for mobile workers, home users and small office environments which require lower volumes of printing.

How do Bluetooth Printers Work?

Bluetooth printers utilise Bluetooth technology to receive print jobs wirelessly via a short-range wireless connection which uses radio signals. Once a connection has been established via pairing a device to the printer, the print job data is transmitted to the printer which receives the data packets and interprets them into printing instructions using specialised software known as a printer driver. Once processed, the printer then creates the final printed document.

What's the Difference Between a Wireless Printer and a Bluetooth Printer?

Both wireless & Bluetooth enabled printers allow users to print wirelessly from devices, however the two technologies have important differences. Bluetooth technology utilises a low power wireless networking protocol designed for distances short distances less than 20m depending on the Class of the Bluetooth radio inside the device. Wireless technology shares the same basic concept of Bluetooth technology but with significantly more power allowing for up to 100m of range from the wireless router. It’s for this reason that printers with wireless capabilities are better suited to larger workspaces where a greater connectivity range is required.

Does a Bluetooth Printer Require Wi-Fi?

A Wi-Fi connection is not required when printing using Bluetooth technology. While Wi-Fi requires a network router to make a connection to the printer, Bluetooth creates a direct connection between the printer and a single device without the need for a router or intermediary connection. This makes a Bluetooth connection ideal for on-the-go printing and smaller workspaces which require wireless printing over shorter ranges.
