{"id":2358,"date":"2015-01-22T17:48:40","date_gmt":"2015-01-22T16:48:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog2.printerland.co.uk\/blog\/?page_id=2358"},"modified":"2015-02-24T18:19:27","modified_gmt":"2015-02-24T17:19:27","slug":"glossary","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.printerland.co.uk\/blog\/printer-buying-guide\/glossary\/","title":{"rendered":"Glossary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We have compiled many of the technical terms found in printer descriptions to help you better understand what you are buying.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog2.printerland.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/printerland_buying_guide_glossary.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blog2.printerland.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/printerland_buying_guide_glossary.jpg\" alt=\"printerland_buying_guide_glossary\" width=\"600\" height=\"430\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2424\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>A<\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u2018A\u2019 Sized Paper<\/strong> \u2013 Common paper sizes from A8 (smallest) to A0 (Largest).<br \/>\n<strong>Absorption<\/strong> \u2013 The drying capabilities of ink printed on porous material.<br \/>\n<strong>Acid-Free Paper<\/strong> \u2013 Paper developed to contain no acid, helping increase longevity.<br \/>\n<strong>Adhesion<\/strong> \u2013 The bond between the material and printed ink.<br \/>\n<strong>Art Paper<\/strong> \u2013 Generally referring to wood-free papers of high quality.<\/p>\n<h3>B<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Basis Weight<\/strong> \u2013 The weight of paper in grams per square metre (GSM).<br \/>\n<strong>Binding<\/strong> \u2013 The process of fixing paper sheets together.<br \/>\n<strong>Bond<\/strong> \u2013 A paper grade often favoured in business correspondence.<br \/>\n<strong>Bleed<\/strong> \u2013 The section of a printed image outside of the area to which the finished sheet will be printed and cut.<br \/>\n<strong>Blend<\/strong> \u2013 Also known as \u2018Graduated Tint\u2019, the smooth transition between printed colours.<br \/>\n<strong>Bulk<\/strong> \u2013 The thickness and substance of paper.<\/p>\n<h3>C<\/h3>\n<p><strong>CMYK<\/strong> \u2013 The four tones used in printing: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Key (Black).<br \/>\n<strong>Continuous Stationery<\/strong> \u2013 Paper supplied on a continuous reel, ready for folding or perforation.<\/p>\n<h3>D<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Digital Printing<\/strong> \u2013 The process of applying artwork directly from a digital file without the use of plates or film.<br \/>\n<strong>Dot Grain<\/strong> \u2013 The amount each dot within a print increases when it is printed.<br \/>\n<strong>DPI<\/strong> \u2013 Short for \u2018Dots Per Inch\u2019, indicating print quality.<\/p>\n<h3>E<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Embossed Paper<\/strong> \u2013 A type of paper which has a raised or depressed design, produced by pressure during the printing process.<br \/>\n<strong>EPS<\/strong> \u2013 Short for \u2018Encapsulated PostScript\u2019 a computer file type widely used in the printing industry.<\/p>\n<h3>F<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Folio<\/strong> \u2013 The number of pages to be printed.<br \/>\n<strong>Fonts<\/strong> \u2013 Styles of letters, numbers and punctuation marks following unified rules. Also known as typeface.<br \/>\n<strong>Four-Colour Process<\/strong> \u2013 The process of printing using the CMYK scale.<\/p>\n<h3>G<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Gb<\/strong> \u2013 An abbreviation of \u2018Gigabyte\u2019 \u2013 the measurement of computer file size.<br \/>\n<strong>Ghosting<\/strong> \u2013 A printer fault wherein the density of ink is inconsistent due to uneven capacity on the printers rollers.<br \/>\n<strong>Grain<\/strong> \u2013 The direction of the paper\u2019s fibres.<br \/>\n<strong>GSM<\/strong> \u2013 An abbreviation of \u2018Grams per Square Metre\u2019.<\/p>\n<h3>H<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Half Perf<\/strong> \u2013 A perforated line stretching only halfway across a sheet\u2019s width.<br \/>\n<strong>Hatching<\/strong> \u2013 The irregular patterns printed on top of text to make contents unreadable for confidentiality reasons.<\/p>\n<h3>I<\/h3>\n<p><strong>IBC<\/strong> \u2013 Inside Back Cover<br \/>\n<strong>IFC<\/strong> \u2013 Inside Front Cover<br \/>\n<strong>Inkjet Printer<\/strong> \u2013 A type of printer which prints using a spray of ink droplets.<\/p>\n<h3>J<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Justified<\/strong> \u2013 The alignment of text in the centre of a page.<\/p>\n<h3>K<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Kerning<\/strong> \u2013 The adjustment of space between set letters.<\/p>\n<h3>L<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Lamination<\/strong> \u2013 The process of strengthening paper or changing its properties.<br \/>\n<strong>Laser Printing<\/strong> \u2013 A method of printing which uses an intense laser to draw the image or text on a drum.<br \/>\n<strong>Layout<\/strong> \u2013 The appearance of the printed output.<br \/>\n<strong>Leading<\/strong> \u2013 The space between lines of text.<br \/>\n<strong>Line Perf<\/strong> \u2013 A perforated line stretching across the width of the sheet.<\/p>\n<h3>M<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Manilla<\/strong> \u2013 A light brown paper made of wood pulp.<br \/>\n<strong>Matt Paper<\/strong> \u2013 Sheets of paper with a dull even finish.<\/p>\n<h3>N<\/h3>\n<p><strong>NCR<\/strong> \u2013 No Carbon Required<\/p>\n<h3>O<\/h3>\n<p><strong>OBC<\/strong> \u2013 Outside Back Cover<br \/>\n<strong>OFC <\/strong>\u2013 Outside Front Cover<\/p>\n<h3>P<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Pantone Colours<\/strong> \u2013 Premixed ink colours on the Pantone Scale.
